Berks County Parrot Head Club Meeting Minutes

Phounding Phather and President “Denny Lorah” welcomed all members to the meeting.
We saluted JR Koch and thanked him for making the golf outing such a huge success! We also saluted Joe and Cheryl Bean,
who recently resigned from the Membership chair position, to thank them for all their hard work over the past couple of years!
The president asked if all members had received a copy of June’s minutes; everyone had.
The president asked for a motion from the floor to approve the minutes. A motion was made by Dot Imbody to accept the
minutes of our last meeting, with a second by Kris Johnson; a vote was taken and the minutes were approved.
The Treasurer’s report was given by Tim Kraft. Tim said we had some recent expenses related to Summer Daze, but that our
checking and savings accounts total about $23K right now. This compares favorably to about $19K in both accounts last year
at this time. A motion was made by Scott Kaufman to accept the report, with a second by Kathey Cahill; a vote was taken
and the treasurer’s report was approved.
OLD BUSINESS:
Cookbooks –are still available, for $10 each.
Float – The float looked great in the July 4th parade. Thanks go to the Gentrys, Ernie Fischer, and the Cressmans.
Website – Duane Cahill announced that the website maintenance will be handled by the Newsletter committee in
the future. The club is looking for a “webmaster”; anyone interested should contact Duane.
Tuesday, August 26th is the Buffett night at the Reading Phillies. Tickets are $26 each. Contact Kris Johnson if interested.
The golf outing on May 15th was a great success; we helped to raise $7,800 for the Family Guidance Center! Executive Director
Kim McConnell accepted the check on behalf of the charity. She thanked the club for all our support and said the Family Guidance
Center will use the money to help many people in the community.
The Caribbean Christmas show will be Saturday, December 5th at the Scottish Rite. Nadirah Shakoor will headline the show!
The next general meeting will be Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 at 7 PM at Third & Spruce. THERE WILL BE NO AUGUST
MEETING.

Keith Imbody (the Admiral) thanked the club for his get well flowers; they made him smile.
Cindy Kauffman invited everyone to the grand re-opening celebration of the Pagoda on Saturday, July 25th from
11am-5pm. The Pagoda is also open all summer (Thursday-Sunday operations). Also, every Wednesday til August
12th, the Mid-Day Café is held in downtown Reading – go to www.downtownreading.com for details.
Our next official Happy Hour will be July 30 at the Railroad House, at 7pm, with Jimmy Budda and Scuba Steve
on the congas.
The Dog Days Gala is July 24 from 7-10pm at the Sovereign Performing Arts Center. It will include live and silent
auctions, and benefits the Animal Rescue League.
Sunday, September 27 is the Holly Heilman Cancer Fund event, from 1-9pm at the Arrowhead Golf Club. Tickets
are $75 per person and include beer, food, etc. See Jimmy Budda for details.
Rich Leiby has volunteered to be our Club Archivist. He explained that he’ll assemble all of the documents the club
produces. We should send any relevant club-related documents and photos to him. The unofficial total of what
we’ve raised over $208,000. Please share any and all info with Rich to add to the archive.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Newsletter Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Duane Cahill
The next newsletter will include info and photos from Summer Daze, and will be published right after the event. After that,
we’ll stick to a regular schedule.
Duane mentioned that there was a sign-up sheet at the meeting for anyone interested in joining the committee. The newsletter
will also be available online in the future, as the website and newsletter functions are combined.
Membership Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Shawn Guevin
Shawn said they’ll continue with what Joe and Cheryl started. We’ll have a membership drive at the summer party, with a
drawing of new members (who signed up that day) and prize basket. New members are always welcome – just use the
sign-up sheets at the meeting or contact the committee head directly.
Charity Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Gary Kraft
Michele from JDRF thanked the club for all we’ve done in advance for the party. They’ve worked hard to find sponsors and
donations, but have been disappointed with the response they’ve gotten from their contacts. They’ve struggled in general
raising money, as have many organizations recently.
Denny thanked Michele and said it’s going to be a great day. Mary Beth told him Jimmy & the Parrots are really excited to
be back.
We’re starting to look for new charities for 2010. If you have a charity in mind, please send the name to Gary (contact info
is also appreciated).
Volunteer Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Duane Cahill
Duane said they’re spending their time trying to recruit volunteers. He said he thinks his committee begs more than Sherrie’s
Sponsorship committee!
There is a sign-up sheet by the door for the Summer Daze party. If you can help, please let Duane know. Tina Shenk schedules
volunteers for the merchandise tables.
Merchandise Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Tina Shenk
If you like to make a donation or have new ideas, please let Tina know. She shared a list of suggested donations items (items
for theme baskets, artwork, jewelry, handcrafted items, vacation getaways, etc.). These are just general suggestions, and any
items would be appreciated! Also, donors always receive parrot points!
Meetings are the second Monday of the month at Denny and Tina’s in Wyomissing. Tina said the committee is always ready
to welcome new volunteers. Sign up at the general meeting or email Tina at tinashenk@aol.com if you’d like to join the committee.
Events Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Jodi Blatt
The next Happy Hour will be at the Railroad House on July 30th and Jimmy Budda will play.
Buffett night at the Reading Phillies on August 26th will be the August Happy Hour. Contact Kris Johnson to buy tickets.
Jodi said we made jambalaya today. We’re Looking for baked goods, specifically cookies and brownies, for Summer Daze.
The BCPHC will be on October 4th from 12-4pm at the Third and Spruce, Cost will be $10, and will include the great buffet plus
one drink.

Sponsorship Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Sherrie and Dave Hallowell
The Sponsorship committee is also struggling to raise money, but is still working on Summer Daze sponsors and patrons for
the program book.
Other Info for Good of Club:
Denny explained that Duane Cahill and Shawn Guevin ran for VP, but didn’t win. However, both said they’d be happy to help
the club in any way they could. When two committee chairs recently resigned, they were the first to step up to fill the positions.
Denny thanked them for the dedication to the club and said we’re very lucky to have them both!
Denny also talked about the Christmas show, and explained that we’ll be involving all of our previous charities. There will be
a Feedback show, where we’ll invite the charities on to talk about their experiences with our club, and promote their own causes.
The President asked for a motion for the meeting to adjourn. A motion was made by Barry Sangrey, with a second by Cheri
Guevin; a vote was taken and the meeting was adjourned.
